Classic & Easygoing All-White Wedding

Alex & Ryan were not fussy about their wedding florals, but they definitely knew what they wanted for their Rancho Pescadero wedding! Simple & white! Nothing too big, but romantic & lovely! We hit the mark perfectly, as you can see in all of the following photos!

Two Tier Cakes: Terrific!

Let’s be honest…we all know it’s the big, multi-tiered wedding cakes that get all the press…all the Oooohs and Aaaaaahs! But, the truth is that many of our requests for wedding cakes are for two-tier cakes that still have a very special wedding feel to them.  We are so happy to create these lovely wedding cake for our amazing clients!

Here are a few of our two-tier favorites:

We added a glitzy, sparkling cake stand to this cake…giving it the feel of a third tier at fractions of the cost.

Adding a special design, in a metallic gold, makes the cake a true sparkler!

Succulents and eucalyptus greens are a favorite greenery used often by our brides. We love the natural and sweet look of this!

Bring the beach vibe to your two-tier cake, by adding the white starfish and blue ribbon, with yellow flowers to shine on your cake!

We are in Cabo so adding white chocolate shells is always fun!

Pink ombre is beautiful and romantic…and looks lovely with the ocean blue in the background.

Cactus Cupcakes: Add some Baja to your wedding dessert table!

Cake, cupcake and succulents

Kyle & Lauren, like many of our brides & grooms, wanted to incorporate a bit of Baja into their Los Cabos wedding! What better way to do that than to include a cactus or two into their wedding cake design! They decided to  add some “cactus” cupcakes to their wedding cake.

They are a popular request, our cactus cupcakes! We provide them for rehearsal dinners, as favors, as part of the wedding cake set-up…or just for fun parties!

Cake, cupcakes & edible succulents

We also can design succulent cupcakes (in the same family as a cactus cupcake, but with more of a succulent look.)

There are all kinds of ways to play with this fun trend! (And, by the way, these are all completely edible. Our cake designer creates the “cacti”  and “succulents” out of fondant, candy bars, cookies, brown sugar, frosting and more.)

4 Ideas You Can Steal From Wedding Cake Trends in 2016

2016 is still a new year, so it’s not too late to continue looking at wedding trends! Our focus this blog is…the coolest new wedding cakes.  The trends in wedding cake design are fun and colorful…perfect for a Cabo wedding!  Check out our favorite 4 trends for 2016 – we are excited to create these for you! So…let’s get started…

Trend #1: The naked cake in CHOCOLATE! (Yes, the naked cake was really popular in 2015, but almost always in vanilla or a neutral color/flavor. For 2016, the hip way to create this cake is by embracing the chocolate, and letting it all hang out!)

Trend #2: Gold flaking on the cake! Not the whole cake…just a touch of shine. Let that cake glow!

Trend #3: The color drip! It’s actually a sweet flavored icing – delish – that also adds a touch of the creative to your cake design.

Trend #4: The geometric wedding cake! Either the shape of the actual cake or the shape of the design on the cake…both options are magical!

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CUT YOUR WEDDING CAKE?

Bride & Groom

This may seem like a very simple question, but we here at Cabo Flowers & Cakes actually hear it a lot.  And the reason is…there is a ceremony that goes with cutting your wedding cake!  Even when you are in Cabo, for your Cabo wedding! We’ve all seen it a hundred times before at weddings where we’ve been a guest, but when you are actually in Cabo, cutting your own wedding cake, it feels different!  This is YOUR cake and you are the one who has to cut it!  If you are working with a Wedding Planner (and we recommend that you do…contact us for our recommendations), she will know how to do the cake cutting, so follow her instructions. If not,…here’s how:

IMG_5463

  1. You should have a separate cake table, decorated beautifully, with a linen, candles, and of course flowers from Cabo Flowers & Cakes! The table should be located in a central area, where there is plenty of room for your guests to stand in front of it, while you two stand behind it. (The table can be moved into this more central area right before the cake cutting time if you want it to.  Just don’t move the table with the cake ON it.  No cake crashes, please!)

2.  Your cake should be on a cake stand on the table (again, have a professional move the cake onto the stand, on the table.) Also on the table should be your cake cutting knife and your cake server.  If you want your champagne glasses on the table, that is fine too.

3.  You also need a small plate, a napkin, and two forks.  These should be set up behind the cake, which is facing your guests.

4.  When it is time to cut your cake, your DJ should begin playing your pre-selected cake cutting song, and the MC should ask your guests to gather around the cake cutting table. Your MC can narrate the cake cutting if you are comfortable with that.

5.  Know ahead of time which layer you are going to be cutting into.  (Some cakes have fake tiers and you do not want to cut into that!)  You will normally cut into the bottom tier of your cake.

6.  With both bride and groom holding the knife, make a small slice in the cake.  Go all the way through, from the top to the bottom of the cake.  Most cakes will have their bottom tier on some type of cakeboard.  You don’t need to cut that.

7.  Then, together, grab the cake server, and place that under the little cake slice and gently lift the cake slice onto the plate.

8.  Using the server, cut the slice into two bite size pieces.

9.  Determine ahead of time whether you will be feeding each other cake from your fingers or your forks.  Forks?  Each use a fork to place the cake in the other’s mouth.  Fingers, go one at time (bride first), placing the bite size piece in our spouse’s mouth. Gentle or smearing icing all over the place? That’s up to you!

10.  Enjoy this traditional moment!  And make sure the photographer was there the whole time getting photos!

YES, YOUR CAKES NEEDS A STAND!

OK, Cabo brides, we know how it is with cakes.  You’ve done your research, you’ve searched your heart (you may have even drawn sketches) and you’ve done your cake tasting.  You’ve finally determined your perfect wedding cake, and you’ve submitted your fabulous ideas to us!  Good job!

But, as we look over your order, we notice…something is missing!  What exactly is your stunning wedding cake going to stand on?  Yes, you need a cake stand!

A cake stand completes your look! A cake stand makes a 3-tier cake appear to be a 4-tier cake, or your 2-tier appear to look like a 3-tier. (You get the idea!) A cake stand keeps your cake  about 6” off your beautiful linen.  And a cake stand is one more decor element that you can use to add dazzle and elegance to your overall Cabo wedding. It also makes your cake easier to cut (raises it to cutting level) and looks great in pictures.

Convinced?  If not, then take a look below at some of our gorgeous cake stand options that might work beautifully for your Cabo Flowers and Cakes wedding cake.  Let us know your favorite!  (Plus we custom design cake stands, too, if needed.)

BLACK AND WHITE WEDDING: A CAKE TO MATCH

P1000098

As black and white themed weddings have become more popular (even at destination wedding locations like Cabo San Lucas), we’ve upped our game when it comes to cake decor.  Black and white wedding cakes have become high-end and on-trend, and we here at Cabo Flowers & Cakes are specialist for this type of cake.

Here are some examples of how a black and white wedding cake stays traditional, elegant and yet unique.  A few things to be aware of for a black and white Cabo wedding cake:

1.   An expert cake designer, like we have on staff at Cabo Flowers & Cakes, must make sure your colors do not run!  The black stays black, and the white stays white.  This is the #1 consideration when creating a beauty like these cakes.P1010074

2. Keep it classy!  One way to do this is to have more white than black on your wedding cake.  This keeps your cake amazing, not scary.P1020208

3. Pull in the decor from your bridal attire and/or event decor.  Black polka dots or stripes on your event linens?  Pull that theme into your cake decor as well.

In the end, a black and white cake is a perfect way to pull together all of your black and white event decor.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO ASK AT YOUR CAKE TASTING (ESPECIALLY FOR A CABO WEDDING):

P1010123

#1 HOW WILL THIS CAKE FARE IN THE WEATHER [ON YOUR DATE]?

Different cakes (and frostings) react differently in different temperatures. With most Cabo weddings being held outdoors, this is a really important question to ask. Then make sure that the cake you’ve picked out will hold up perfectly during your event’s time of the year.

#2 CAN I SAVE (AND TRAVEL WITH) MY CAKE TOP?

Tradition says that the top tier of your cake should be saved for your one year anniversary. However, if you are having a destination wedding (like in Cabo), many countries may limit what you can and can’t take back across the border. If you have to check off the box on your Customs form stating that you are carrying back food, this may increase your chances at time in the Customs line. Don’t bring back food. Enjoy your top tier of your cake with your guests at the event, or save it for the day or two afterwards.

#3 WHAT IS YOUR SPECIALTY?

Your cake baker’s specialty will be that cake that she specializes in, that she is an expert at. It will be the cake that she likes the best and is very proud of. That may be reason enough to trust her and trust that this must be one awesome cake combination for it to be so highly regarded by her. Go for the specialty, at least on one tier!

#4 HOW DO YOU PRESENT THE CAKE?

Does the cake include a cake stand? Is there a choice of cake stand? Can I see photos of that? What about with cupcakes? (Their presentation is especially important, as you don’t want them to look like you are at an elementary school birthday party in your wedding photos.) How the cake is actually presented on the night of your wedding is almost as important as how it tastes. Almost…

In the end, your cake tasting should be fun and informative (and a great way to get your groom involved as well.) We all love a great slice of cake! At Cabo Flowers & Cakes, we love a tasting too because it gives us a chance to make sure our couples are happy and in love with their cake choices.
